My 5 from 2021: Entertainment, Books & Sports

Another year went past, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic with newer challenges cropping up every day for us. While people like me belonged to the privileged lot for being able to work from home and enjoy the benefits of binging on movies and sports, the world outside had been lot more difficult, even for those, whose performances we enjoy sitting back at home. So here is my top five from 2021 across entertainment, books and sports – what I enjoyed the most.

Thanks to OTT streaming services, we relished the best of the entertainment across all mediums. Without giving out any spoiler, this set will surely make it clear how regional movies (specially Malayalam) have influenced me, through their broad range of stories about everyday life. If there is one which I need to pick from these, it will be The Great Indian Kitchen. You need to watch it, if you haven’t yet.

Special Mention: Since this is about entertainment, it will be my misgiving, if I don’t mention another set from different medium (audio) – The Count of Monte Cristo audio story-telling in Bengali and OST of Pagglait (by Arijit Singh).

2021 had been a relatively low year in terms of the books I could read. But the nonetheless, these five were my favorite. Two of the books are in my mother tongue and the last one, Surjotamoshi sparked my interest in my city’s colonial past, which is excellently covered in Sripantho’s classic “Kolkata“. The first one is of-course, the much needed introduction to the magical world for my mini monkey.

2021 has been a watershed moment/year for us, Indian sporting fans – be it the track and field Olympic Gold or conquering the cricketing frontier in Gabba or Bala Devi being the first Indian woman to score in European top football league! But beyond that, how can I miss – Argentina winning Copa (and Messi with the cup!) and the biggest sporting moment when the Danish footballers came together and helped their captain Erikson to live for another day!

So that’s my favorites from an otherwise dull and sad year for the entire human race. Did it match with yours or are your favorites something, I should see/read? Let me know in the comments below.
