On a Sushi Trail in Kolkata – Week 1 @Sushi Oke

Our love for Japanese food, specially Sushis started around the time when we were living in London and used to gorge on various Nigiris and Maaki Roll platters daily for lunch. London had great Sushi bars, thanks to the huge Japanese population living in the city – our favourite ones were Wasabi and Wagamana.

However upon coming back to India we have started missing those small Japanese delicacies, and Japanese food still not being that popular among the common Indians, it is hard to find that perfect place. Thus begins our Sushi Trail – in search of the best Sushi Bar in Kolkata 🙂

Find of this week – Sushi Oke.

Hidden away in a corner on the usually bustling Short Street, just opposite St. Xaviers College, its easy to miss this small and cute little Sushi bar. The restaurant is not a very posh one, but interiors are done up elegantly with cherry blossom wallpapers and Japanese styled low wooden seating. The food was quite good too, though I would have liked it better had they been a little more generous in the helpings.

We tried Salmon Nigiris which were tasty enough, with the Salmon perfectly cured and fresh. We also ordered a plate of Boston Maki Rolls with Salmon, CrabMeat and Scallions stuffing inside, which were great too. Though the Sushis were good, the real spoiler was the Wasabi paste – it was quite bland. With that typical kick of the Wasabi missing, out Sushi rendezvous felt incomplete and thus was sadly not a very fulfilling one.

Also the restaurent does seem to be accepting credit cards – which again proved to be bit of a hassle 😦

Food – 3.5 / 5
Ambience – 3.5 / 5
Value for money – 3.5 / 5

Our Sushi trail continues – looking forward to finding another new joint…

See you next week 🙂
